Baby It's You         The Beatles |
The Beatles performed "Baby It's You" as part of their stage act from 1961 until 1963. It was the only Burt Bacharach song the group covered. They recorded it on February 11, 1963 for their album Please Please Me along with "Boys", another Shirelles song. Capitol included it on The Early Beatles. John sings lead - George and Paul sing background.

Baby Scratch My Back         Slim Harpo |
With the tremendous soul explosion that occured in 1965, there was also renewed interest in that style's predecessor, blues music. Slim Harpo, a Louisiana born blues singer/harpist, had dented the Top 40 charts earlier, in 1961. Now, in 1966 he had another chance, and he hit # 16 with "Baby Scratch My Back," a humorous 12 bar blues. The guitarist doing the "chicken scratch" (at letter E), among other things, is Lightnin' Slim (Otis Hicks).

I Can't Believe What You Say         Ike & Tina Turner |
A music student of mine recently gave me a cd mix of Keith Richard's favorite tracks. The subject intigued me, of course. Among the expected blues tracks came this rare gem by Ike & Tina Turner, released in 1964, and just hitting the Top 100 at #95. Cool and funky, a hit in my book.

Kansas City         Wilbert Harrison |
Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, one of rock'n'roll's early songwriting teams, had written "Kansas City" back in 1952. It took seven years for them to find the artist for the song. When Wilbert Harrison recorded "Kansas City" in 1959, Billboard called it "a finger-snapping blues with a contagious sound." The song has gone on to become one of the most played standards of all time, usually with a stop-time device in the later verses.

Soul Finger         Bar-Kays |
There may understandably be some confusion as to the difference between the various instrumental groups that came out of Memphis in the '60s. The Bar-Kays were created by drummer of Booker T & the MG's, Al Jackson. Their one hit was "Soul Finger," which hit # 17 in 1967. Most of the members were killed in the plane crash that also killed Otis Redding

Tramp         Otis & Carla |
By 1966, Otis Redding and Carla Thomas were both established stars on both the pop and R&B charts. Carla, at home in Memphis for the Christmas holidays, recorded this good natured exchange, where she rips Otis with one insult after another. The song went to # 2 on the R&B charts, and #26 on the pop charts the next year. The drumming, of course, was supplied by the able Al Jackson Jr.

Under The Boardwalk         The Drifters |
One of the all time anthems to summer fun, the Drifters' "Under The Boardwalk" was recorded under stressful conditions, to say the least. The group's lead singer Rudy Lewis died the morning of the recording session! The Drifters had endured a steady succession of lead singers that began with the great Clyde McPhatter, and peaked with Ben E. King. When Lewis died, Johnny Moore, who had served from 1955 to 1957, stepped in to sing this classic.
