"Maneater" by Hall & Oates
"Michelle" by The Beatles
Daryl Hall and John Oates were a '70s and '80s extension of the Righteous Brothers' "blue-eyed soul," producing 29 Top 40 hits over 14 years. Their first hits were soulful ballads like "Sara Smile" and "She's Gone." During the '80s, their hits tended toward techno-pop, with several recordings utilizing cheap sounding drum machines, often with intriguing results. Mickey Curry is the drummer on "Maneater" (#1 in 1982), playing against the drum machine. Watch out for that cat wondering about in the video. Paul would often attend college parties with John, and he would often fit in by pretending to be French, and singing quasi-French songs (French culture was an in thing then). John encouraged him to make up a real French song for the Rubber Soul album. He received some real French words from his friend Ivan Vaughn, whose wife was a French teacher. John came up with the "I love you" part in the middle. Of course it went to #1 in France, and won a Grammy in 1966 for Song Of The Year. Paul later mailed a check to Jan Vaughn (Ivan's wife) for the help. Well done, Paul.

All right, I can't help it.

Q. How do you say "cut the grass" in French?

A. Meaux de lawn. (cymbal crash goes here)

"My Hometown" by Bruce Springsteen
"More Than A Feeling" by Boston
Bruce Springsteens' growth as a songwriter reached a sublime height with one of the biggest selling albums of the '80s, Born In The U.S.A. Songs like "My Hometown," the last track of the album, have such a conversational strength in the lyrics, that they can be placed along the works of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Van Morrison, as sources of inspired storytelling in the context of rock music. Springsteen's high energy, three hour long concerts were already legendary by the time Born In The U.S.A. was released in 1984; so much so, that, ten years earlier, Rolling Stone magazine editor Jon Landau was moved to remark, "I saw rock and roll's future and its name is Bruce Springsteen." Max Weinberg is the drummer. Boston leader Tom Scholz is one of those eccentric perfectionists that was born to drive record companies crazy. After receiving a master's degree at MIT, he turned his interests to rock music. After "More Than A Feeling" (from the debut album Boston, which to date was the largest selling debut album in history) hit it big in 1976, it was eight years before Scholz felt his second album was ready for release! Sib Hashian is the drummer on this classic.

"More Than A Woman" by The Bee Gees
"Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett
The movie soundtrack Saturday Night Fever is the largest selling soundtrack album of all time. The movie and the music were released in 1977, at the height of the disco craze, and starred John Travolta as Tony Manero, a 20 year old New Yorker who sells paint during the week, but on Saturday nights becomes a dancing hit at the local disco. Here is another Bee Gees hit from the soundtrack. Here's what the Harmony Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock said about Wilson Pickett: "One of the great soul performers of the '60s, Wilson Pickett summed up for many what soul was all about. Sly. sexy, macho, and aggresive, he had all the vocal equipment required to wring out the last ounce of a song. His hit singles demonstrate perfectly the raw exhilaration of '60s soul, and are essentials for any rounded record collection." We get all that in this video.

"My Brave Face" by Paul McCartney
"My Guy" by Mary Wells
Perhaps the most successful musician in pop music, Paul McCartney holds many records, according to Billboard magazine. Besides being a member of the Beatles, the greatest rock group of all time, he is listed at number six in the Top 100 artists. The writer of over 50 Top Ten hits, McCartney wrote "My Brave Face" with Elvis Costello, and it appears on McCartney's Flowers in the Dirt album. Chris Whitten is doing the solid drumming here. The beginning of this video with the Japanese fan is somewhat perplexing... :) In 1960, a 17 year old Mary Wells presented a song she had written for Jackie Wilson ("Bye Bye Baby") to Berry Gordy, who was producing Wilson then. Gordy signed her up instead to his newly formed label, Motown. Wells turned out to be the label's first artist to have a # 1 single. "My Guy" was written by Smokey Robinson, who followed up the next year by writing "My Girl" for the Temptations. In this clip. Mary Wells sings this song on the television show Shindig. Host Jimmy Neill introduces her.

"Needles And Pins" by The Searchers
Most people know that the Beatles, who spearheaded the British Ivasion of 1964, were from Liverpool, England. Those groups from Liverpool and Manchester (the town on the other side of nearby Mersey River) were called Mersey Beat groups. The Searchers in those days were second only to the Beatles in popularity. "Needles And Pins" was their first stateside hit, going to # 13 (and # 1 in the UK) in 1964. Chris Curtis was the drummer. Here they are doing their thing. And here is some more Beatles trivia if you're interested.
